Short bench numbers didn’t stop the Phoenix Premier teams on Wednesday night as they came up against Southern Wolves for the second time this season.
In the Premier Women’s game, an evenly-fought first quarter was not reflected on the scoreboard as Wolves failed to capitalise on a number of opportunities. Missed attempts from the Wolves saw Phoenix jump out to an early lead, going into the first break up by 16 points.
Taking their first quarter momentum into the start of the second, Hobart scored 13 unanswered points, breaking out to a 41-12 lead by halfway through the quarter. A Wolves timeout steadied the ship a little, allowing them to stem the flow of Phoenix offence, going into the long break with the score at 54-25.
Despite strong efforts from the Wolves’ Cassie Simmons and Laura Jackson trying to lift their team, Phoenix continued to extend their lead throughout the second half on the back of an excellent team-wide performance, eventually running away 114-55 winners.
The Hobart Phoenix Men’s Premier team took to the floor, also with only one substitute for the game. The Phoenix jumped out to an early lead on the back of strong play from Jordan Hargrave and Robert Inches. A tight contest ensued as Southern Wolves steadied, coming back in the dying minutes of the quarter to go into the first break nine points down.
Both teams missed opportunities throughout the second quarter as the teams when point-for-point throughout, Phoenix unable to break away as the Wolves held to an 8 point deficit until the final two minutes when Hobart broke away.
The Wolves came out into the second half fired up, with an 11-2 run bringing them back into striking distance. However, it was as close as they could come to running down the Phoenix as Inches scored 14 points for the quarter, all but locking in the result. The Phoenix eventually taking out the win 77-54 to retain second place in the competition.
