Round 13 saw Hobart Phoenix Basketball Association implementing a new initiative, Referee Appreciation Round. As a sign of respect to the Basketball Tasmania referees, each team wore green tape arm bands, and took special effort to appreciate and acknowledge the hard work that our referees put into the game of basketball in our region.
Our Premier Women’s team came up against the Southern Wolves, with the Wolves coming out of the blocks fighting and putting up a strong fight throughout the first half. Missing Kylie McCauley’s presence in the post, the Phoenix weren’t able to gain the ascendency that they would have liked early, taking a flattering ten-point lead into the half time break.
A half-time rev up from stand-in coach Dwain Davie fired the Phoenix up as they leapt out of the blocks in the third quarter going on a 12-4 run early before eventually running out 26-point winners, 67-41.
The Hobart Premier Men’s team also saw a hard-fought first half in their game against Southern Wolves, in a shoot out that saw almost 100 points scored in the first half of the game, and the Wolves taking a three point lead into the break.
Nick Amos’s fourth three-pointer of the night in the opening minute of the third quarter levelled the scores, and sparked a Phoenix charge, opening the second half with an 18-3 run that blew the game open. The Wolves were simply unable to keep up the pace, with Phoenix taking the win 99-73.
